Rugby players pursue legal action for injuries

It’s difficult to miss the press coverage of former professional rugby players who are pursuing legal action against the rugby’s governing bodies. These ex-players who have sustained brain injuries that have either forced them to retire or are causing ongoing concerns for their health after leaving the sport are creating a surge in claims from other players coming forward who have sustained similar injuries during their playing careers.

These public cases are highlighting injuries such as the inability to remember some or any of their games played, change of personality / mental state and diagnosis of early onset dementia. The governing bodies have a maximum of three months from the date of acknowledgement of the letter of claim to provide their initial responses.

Following an ongoing recent public case, a joint statement was released from the governing bodies: “World Rugby, the Rugby Football Union and Welsh Rugby Union can confirm they have received a letter of claim from solicitors representing certain players and will now take time to consider its contents. We have been deeply saddened to hear the brave personal accounts from former players. Rugby is a contact sport and while there is an element of risk to playing any sport, rugby takes player welfare extremely seriously and it continues to be our number one priority. As a result of scientific knowledge improving, rugby has developed its approach to concussion surveillance, education, management and prevention across the whole game.” [1]  (https://www.world.rugby/news/609743/joint-statement-on-behalf-of-world-rugby-the-rugby-football-union-and-the-welsh-rugby-union)
